David Boles wrote the libretto and lyrics for — Maslova: Tolstoy Musical — with music by Al Carmines and inspired by the Count Leo Tolstoy novel, "Resurrection." The musical was a Summer project for the Oscar Hammerstein II Center for Theatre Studies at the Columbia University School of the Arts and was performed at Columbia University Teachers College in the Fall. Boles and Carmines were each awarded Summer stipends from the Columbia University School of the Arts in 1989 to write the musical. Howard Stein and Grafton Nunes were faculty advisors.
